Baseball
John Keller & Keith Moreland
(Co-Heads of Baseball) For the past seven years, John Keller and Keith Moreland have been at the helm of the tradition-rich St. Stephen’s baseball program. In that time, the Spartans have won over two-thirds of their games, with one SPC Division II Championship in 2002. In 2005, the Spartans (29-2) completed their best baseball season in school history by finishing second in the Division I SPC Championship game. In addition, for the first time in the program, this team was ranked first in the Central Texas baseball poll. In the 2004 season, the Spartan team continually received top ten ranking in Central Texas and finished the season with a 26-6 record. Keller and Moreland, long-time friends and associates through the Baseball Academy of Texas, have worked together since joining the St. Stephen’s program in 2000. Keller, an outfielder at Texas Tech University, was awarded MVP of the Red Raiders’ team in 1979. Moreland is a 12-year major league veteran, notably with the Chicago Cubs and Philadelphia Phillies, with whom he won a World Series in 1980. Moreland also won a National Championship with the University of Texas in 1975 and was a three-time All-American.
Basketball
La-Mont King
(Varsity Girls Basketball Coach) Coach King is a former stand-out point-guard at Louisiana Tech University. He is also the founder of Next-Level Youth Basketball, a premier basketball development program geared toward girls and boys ages 11-18.
Chris Breckwoldt
(Head of Basketball) Coach Breckwoldt holds the position of Boy’s Varsity Associate Head Coach for St. Stephen’s Episcopal School. As a Basketball Coach at St. Stephen’s for the past 14 years, he has coached all levels from 6th grade to Varsity. Over the last seven years the Spartans have compiled a record of 187-58 (72-17 in conference games), won four South Zone championships, won two Division 2 championships, and played in three SPC Division I championship games.
Richmond McIver
(Basketball Coach) Coach McIver is the Assistance Head Coach for the Boy's Varsity Basketball Team. In the last 3 years at St. Stephen's Episcopal School Richmond has coach the middle school, freshman and J.V. basketball teams. In high school he was first team all-state and named Texas 4A Player of the Year. Richmond has played for the University of Michigan and the University of Texas. While at the University of Michigan his team reached the 1992 Final Four featuring the Fab Five. While at the University of Texas he won 2 SWC championships. After college he played 5 years professionally in Europe, Asia and South America. He is also a skill development basketball and fitness trainer.
Field Hockey
Jennifer Anderson
(Head of Field Hockey) Coach Anderson graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she held the position of Captain for the Tar Heel Field Hockey team her senior year (1988). Coach Anderson claimed four Atlantic Coast Conference Championships (’85-’88) and earned two NCAA Final Four births (’86-’87) during her collegiate career. In her ninth year coaching for St. Stephen’s Episcopal School, Coach Anderson also serves as a United States Field Hockey Association Futures Coach.
Football
Taylor Stewart
(Head of Football) Coach Stewart graduated from The University of Texas at Austin with a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology. Coach Stewart played football for perennial state power Plano Senior High School, where he earned district honors. He has just completed his fourth year working with the St. Stephen’s Football program, where he currently holds the title Defensive Coordinator.
Soccer
Bobby Murphy
(Head of Soccer) Coach Murphy, director of the St. Stephen’s Soccer Academy, is a competitive player who knows how to bring out the best in athletes. His experience includes serving as director of coaching and player development for the South Texas Youth Soccer Association. Murphy, who holds a United States Soccer Federation "A" License and a National Youth License, serves on the United States Soccer Federation National Team Staff for Education, Region III Olympic Development Staff, and U.S. Youth Soccer Education Staff. He is also on the staff of the USSF Education Staff, teaching other coaches how to coach. Murphy has excellent academic and athletic credentials. He studied and played soccer at Clemson University in South Carolina, transferring to New Hampshire College, where he earned a bachelor’s in English. Murphy received a master’s in education at Plymouth State College in New Hampshire. As a student at Greenhill School in Dallas, he was three-time all-Southwest Preparatory Conference, 1986-88. One of the top 25 players in the South, he was on the Olympic Development Program Regional Pool and Team. After college he played three years in the USISL professional league in Boston and New Hampshire.
Tennis
Meredith Greiger-Walton
(Head of Tennis) Coach Greiger-Walton currently serves on the Texas Coaches Commission. She is a certified USPTA P1 and has completed the USTA High Performance Coaches workshop. In 2005, she led the USTA Texas junior Fed Cup team its first championship in 22 years. She has been a presenter at the USTA Tennis Teachers Conference in New York, as well as a speaker as USPTA Texas and CATA conventions. As the assistant women’s tennis coach at the University of Texas at Austin, Coach Walton helped guide the Horns to two consecutive Big 12 regular season and tournament championships, as well as the NCAA Round of 16 in 2001 and 2002. Geiger-Walton played on the professional tennis circuit from 1994 to 1996, garnering three career doubles victories in pro events. Following her professional playing career, she served as Director of Player Development for the Southwest section of the United States Tennis Association (USTA) from 1997 to 1998. Geiger-Walton coached at St. Stephen’s from 1998 to 2000 as Director of Girls’ Tennis.
Track & Field
Paul Richards
(Head of Track & Field) Coach Paul Richards, former UT Sprints and Hurdle Coach, currently serves as Head Track & Field Coach for St. Stephen's Episcopal School. As a two-time Olympian, he has coached and worked with Olympic and World Medalists.
Merlene Frazer
(Track & Field) Marlene Frazer, a former UT All-American, competed at the highest levels of Track and Field becoming an Olympian and ranking 5th in the world at 200 Meters in 1999.
Kevin Waters
(Track & Field) Kevin Waters is a member of the Middle School Physical Education Department at Saint Mary's Hall. In addition to his teaching duties he is the Head Varsity Track & Field Coach, and the Middle School Cross Country Coach. Kevin holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Health Promotion and Physical Education from the University of Houston. He also attended The University of Kansas as a Scholarship Track and Field Athlete in the 1980’s. He is a certified member as a level 2 Sprint, Hurdle and Relay Coach of USA Track & Field, and is also a member of TAPHERD (Texas Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance). He is a Certified American Heart Association C.P.R. and First Aid Instructor.
Sue Humphrey
(Track & Field) has been named the Nike Elite Coach of the Year. She was an Olympic Coach in 1992 and 1996. Some of her additional accomplishments include USA National Team Coach since 1974, Head Pan Am Games Coach 1987, Head World Cup Coach in 1985 and Head Olympic Manager in 1992. She is one of the World's Best high jump coaches.
Triathlon
Michael Bland
(Head of Triathlon) Coach Bland has been coaching and personal training since 1980. Michael has worked with clients ranging from cancer and rehab patients to professional athletes. Michael’s passion for life shows through his training. His credentials include ISSA Certified Personal Trainer, USA Triathlon Level 1 Coach, CrossFit Elite Fitness certification and USA Cycling Expert Coach. Michael is the Director of the USAT Youth National Development Camp in Austin Texas this June 2006. Michael was appointed Team USA Elite head coach for the Long Course Duathlon World Championship this May 2006 and coach 3 athletes to the Short Course in Corner Brook Canada Worlds Championship 2006. Michael is the Director and Head Coach for Team ATS at St Stephens School in Austin Texas. Team ATS has won 4 National Championship and a Worlds Championship in 2006 and has 7 athletes qualified for Worlds Championship in 2006. Michael is the director of Austin Tri-Fit INC. 501(C) 3 non-profit organization that hosts many multi-sports events to help support youth and junior kids develop lifetime skills.
Robert J. Byard
(Triathlon) Coach Byard holds a Bachelor of Science Degree and a Master of Arts Degree, both in Business. He served in the Air Force for 34 years and as an Emergency Medical Technician for four years. Mr. Byard is a certified USA-Triathlon Level II Coach, Personal Trainer (International Sports Sciences Association), USA-Cycling (USAC) Level 1 Expert Coach, USA-Track & Field Level 1 Coach and American Swimming Coaching Association level 1 Coach. Robert J. Byard has competed in 18 marathons and numerous duathlons and triathlons, has competed in 12 Ironman Triathlons, and is a Team USA Member Qualified for the ITU World LC Triathlon Championship.
Alexander Hutchison
(Triathlon) Coach Hutchison is completing his PhD in exercise physiology at the University of Houston. His areas of interest include the relationship between obesity and chronic inflammation, overtraining syndrome in elite athletes, and immunology. He has an extensive background in aerobic and resistance training. He has coached swimming, water polo, and weight training at the club, high school, and collegiate levels. Coach Hutchison is a level 1 certified triathlon coach with USAT and a level 4 certified swimming coach with ASCA. He started Highlander Triathlon in 2005 and currently coaches 8 athletes in the Houston area. He also provides VO2peak and lactate threshold testing at the University of Houston in the Laboratory of Integrative Physiology, and has been an invited speaker for the Houston Racing Triathlon Club and Kingwood Triathlon Club. Alexander received a Bachelor of Science in natural science from the University of Puget Sound, where he was a member of the 1995 and 1996 Men’s National Championship Swim Teams. He also has a Master of Science in Kinesiology from Texas A&M University where he served as an assistant strength and conditioning coach. Alexander is an age group level triathlete and competes several times a year in sprint and international distance events.
Diane Proud
(Triathlon) Coach Proud is a personal health and wellness coach in Irving, Texas and serves as the Running (and Triathlon) coach specialist for the world-renowned Cooper Aerobics Fitness Center in Dallas, Texas. Over the last six years, Ms. Proud has served as the Health & Wellness Project Chairperson for the Diabetes Expo, coached “Running 101” training classes, created and provided “Triathlon 101” Clinics, and created and chaired the inaugural “Team Diabetes” program in Dallas. Diane Proud holds a USA Triathlon Level I Coaching Certification, is a Cat II USA Triathlon Official, and is American Red Cross CPR, water safety and first aid certified. Ms. Proud is a competitive masters multi-sport athlete. She has competed in 18 National Triathlon and Duathlon Championships, represented TEAM USA in 19 World Championships, was a 3-time Ironman finisher in Hawaii and New Zealand, a Team Saucony member for eight years and a Team On member of ten years.
Sandra Sutherland
(Triathlon) Coach Sutherland, a 43-year-old mother to two great triathletes, began her own training nine years ago. In 2000, she received her USAT certification. She has competed in over 25 races and continues to enjoy each event all year long. She has helped organize and direct children’s and adult races in her hometown. YMCA/KIWANIS OF THE WOODLANDS and consulted to the Race Director for CB&I Woodlands Adult Triathlon, which was voted best new race it’s first year! She has conducted clinics and camps for children, youth, and adults of all ages for triathlon and running. She is a YMCA instructor/personal trainer. Mrs. Sutherland is a USAT/TNT certified Coach, Teacher, Mother, Wife, and dog lover. She enjoys the outdoors: from trail running to kayaking in adventure races. She enjoys friends and family and going out after a hard day at the race! She is very blessed to have the energy and time to train; She thanks her husband and family for their support and encouragement. She is excited about life and loves sharing that with others!
