PHILOSOPHY
Dance majors attending the Texas Arts Project will receive the highest quality of dance training.
The goal of the dance department is to empower the students by giving them the tools to further understand their bodies and their minds.
Students maintain a rigorous training and rehearsal schedule throughout camp that will leave them with tools for success as artists and students. The regiment will teach them self-discipline, self-confidence and the ability to focus and work as a team.
Dance majors must have completed two years of formal training.
CURRICULUM
Technique classes will guide the dancers to find both strength and freedom within their bodies and minds. The primary focus is on learning the fundamentals of alignment and how to analyze movement. These principals are the foundation of all dance forms. Students will also take extensive classes in jazz, ballet, modern, tap, hip-hop and musical theatre. The exposure to multiple disciplines will help to develop a technically strong and versatile dancer.
Class size is limited to 20, enabling the teacher to reach every student in class. The highly qualified team of dance professionals are dedicated to broadening each student's knowledge and understanding of dance. It is our goal that the students not only grow technically, but artistically.
COURSE DESCRIPTIONS
BALLET
Focus on building the alignment, strength, and stretch necessary for classical ballet and contemporary dance work. Develop a sense of musicality and phrasing and an awareness of ballet as a vital foundation for all forms of dance.
JAZZ
Study movement based on body part isolations, sequential movement, turns and jumps. Develop strong lines, technique and an understanding of the body's center of movement.
TAP
Examine basic exercises, precision, coordination and strong rhythmic tap skills. Emphasis is placed on musicality, relaxation and individuality.
MODERN
Begin to understand the basis of movement. Incorporate movement concepts, visualization, lines and space into dance. Stretch not only your body with study, but also your mind to understand how your body moves. Develop a growing awareness of the importance of the breath through movement.
HIP-HOP
Enhance knowledge of this popular high-energy, fast-paced dance form.
BROADWAY
Learn original choreography from Broadway musicals.
SPECIALS
Respect for our bodies and minds is first at Texas Arts Project. Throughout TAP CAMP the students will be exposed to complementary movement practices for developing their core strength, focus and flexibility. Practices such as Hatha Yoga, Pilates and the Feldencratz Method are tools used by the faculty for developing physical and mental awareness. In previous years the students have also had workshops in nutrition, classes in the pool for exploring alignment, acrobatics and partnering instruction.
REHEARSAL
One of the most important tools for a professional dancer is learning how to adapt to different styles and choreographers. Each choreographer has their own way of exploring composition, musicality, phrasing and performance. Students will learn how to consistently read and retain material regardless of style or direction. Every student will have the opportunity to develop performance skills and to fine-tune their focus.
SHOWCASE
The final showcase provides a consistent forum for applying technique while consistently developing the focus and discipline required for performance.
On average our students participate in 4 different showcase pieces with just as many choreographers! This is in addition to the work that they will be doing in all camp rehearsal.
Texas Arts Project teaches dance majors how to develop their discipline, confidence, focus and ability to work as a team. They learn skills that they can apply to future creative projects, their schoolwork and future pursuits.
